Read all about it! School food in the news.

Each month, our staff reads hundreds of media reports on the subject of school nutrition. We curate our favorites in a monthly blog post we call, “In the News.” Highlighting positive stories about the great things going on in school cafeterias helps us in many ways: providing inspiration, connecting school nutrition professionals from across the country, and promoting those programs and individuals who are taking the extra step to make their school nutrition program the very best it can be.

Community Eligibility

With schools across the country poised to begin the 2014-15 SY, the number of Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) headlines have exploded—we see at least one per day in our Google Alerts! Missoula County Public Schools (MO), Springfield Public Schools (MA), and Grants/Cibola County Schools (MN) are just a few of the latest to join the CEP movement.

Fuel Up to Play 60

The big Fuel Up to Play 60 news this month was the Student Ambassadors Summit in Dallas, TX, held July 14-17. Congratulations to all of the student ambassadors in attendance! You can read up on the summit on The Huddle—the official student blog for Fuel Up to Play 60.

ANC 2014 in Boston

Another great ANC is in the books! What was your favorite part—the education sessions? The motivational speakers in the general sessions? Catching up with old friends and making new ones? Leave us a note in the comments! [Ed. note: Insert link to ANC blog]

For those who were unable to attend ANC in Boston this year, we recently compiled a list of some of our favorite resources from the education sessions. If you are looking for information on school breakfast and breakfast-in-the-classroom, visit our blog on ANC 2014 to find links to some excellent presentations from the conference.

Summer School for SN Professionals

School nutrition professionals have had a busy summer! Not only did many of you attend ANC 2014 in Boston, but summer has been a time for seeking grant opportunities, as well as pursuing additional culinary and nutrition training. We loved this story about the staff at the Humboldt Unified School District (AZ), who were able to take Nutrition 101, Culinary Skills, and CPR/First Aid during the summer months.

$16 Million Awarded to Improve California School Nutrition Programs

Huge award dollars tend to catch our eye, so a number like $16 million was bound to grab our attention. Earlier this month it was announced that almost 700 California public schools would be awarded more than $16 million, from three different grants, to help school cafeterias. The funds were awarded through the School Breakfast Program and Summer Food Service Program Start-up or Expansion Grant; the 2013 National School Lunch Program Equipment Assistance Grant; and the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant.
