While hunger is a very real issue affecting children across America, obesity is another—and the two are not mutually exclusive. A child facing malnutrition may also be facing an obesity risk, which is why school foodservice is such important work; we are fighting the same battle, on different fronts, every single day. Here at Beyond Breakfast we know that eating breakfast not only satisfies hunger—allowing us to lead more productive work and school days—but that it also reduces the odds of becoming overweight or obese, as well as risk for Type 2 diabetes.

More than 23 million kids and teens here in the U.S. are overweight or obese; we are facing an epidemic. The risk of obesity positions nearly one-third of American children for an early risk of Type 2 diabetes, as well as high blood pressure, heart disease, or even stroke.

National Childhood Obesity Month has been recognized by both President Obama and the U.S. Congress since September 2010. To learn how to participate, and to find resources to help you and your school join the fight against childhood obesity, visit these websites:

I would like to recommend the free NAAFA Child Advocacy ToolkitSM (CATK) and other written guidelines/resources to assist you looking at programs. The total health of our nation’s children is a serious responsibility.

The NAAFA Child Advocacy Toolkit shows how Health At Every Size® takes the focus off weight and directs it to healthful eating and enjoyable movement. It addresses the bullying, building positive self-image and eliminating stigmatization of large children. Additionally, the CATK lists resources available to parents and educators or caregivers for educational materials, curriculum and programming that is beneficial for all children. It can be found at:
