September is here, which means school is in full swing across the country! We love that “back-to-school” feeling, and all of the things that come with it—fresh apples, crisp morning air, and of course—football! In case you missed it, Fuel Up to Play 60 has launched their latest initiative—For the Love of Play—and it’s come around just in time for football season. Challenging students to get active for 60 minutes (or more!) of exercise a day, the Love of Play campaign is the perfect time to add fun, football-themed activities to kids’ daily activities. And don’t forget, you have until November 5, 2014, to apply for Fuel Up to Play 60 funds—you could win up to $4000 for your school!

One cool thing about September is the number of healthy observances we celebrate that can relate to school nutrition. Here are five:

September is … No Kid Hungry Month

Dining out in September? All month long No Kid Hungry asks you to share pictures of your meal at any one of their 90 participating restaurants; don’t forget to use the hashtag #90Meals.

September is … National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Sponsored by Healthier Kids, Brighter Futures, National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month (COAM) is also celebrated in September. Check out the resources and videos available to help you incorporate COAM into your cafeteria promotions.

September is … Fruits & Veggies—More Matters Month

Fruits & Veggies More Matters! Month is a great way to incorporate information on all the fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables that are available in your child nutrition program. Check the Fruits & Veggies More Matters! website for nutrition information, recipes, videos, meal planning guides, and much, much more.

September is … National Food Safety Education Month

The Partnership for Food Safety Education celebrates National Food Safety Education Month in September, as well. (And how great is their website address—FightBac.org?) In addition for all of the safe food handling info you might need, there is a section called Fight Bac!® for Kids which includes curriculum you can incorporate in classrooms and the cafeteria.

September is … Whole Grains Month

Finally, in September we celebrate Whole Grains Month with the Whole Grains Council. Check out a selection of guest blogs, whole grain-rich foodservice recipes, and more on the Whole Grains Council website.

September 27 is Family Health & Fitness Day USA

Bring the whole, healthy month of September full circle by celebrating Family Health & Fitness Day USA on September 27! Tie in your month long #LoveOfPlay activity and get the whole family up and moving, together!
