Breakfast in the Classroom in Texas

As Houston-area schools continue to recover from Hurricane Harvey, some students still have not returned to their classrooms while still others face extended school days to make up missed time. If your Texas school or district was affected by Harvey, and you’re interested in implementing breakfast-in-the-classroom in SY 2017-18, the Partners for BIC can help; if you qualify, our grant can help cover upfront costs associated with breakfast-in-the-classroom startup and implementation costs such as equipment, outreach, promotion, and other related expenses.

September is Better Breakfast Month

A great way to kick of school breakfast promotions in September is by tying it to “Better Breakfast Month” celebrations. September is Better Breakfast Month, which provides you with the opportunity to share with parents and stakeholders the importance of a delicious, nutritious school breakfast. Among other benefits, school breakfast is linked to:

  • Higher attendance
  • Improved academic performance
  • Better test scores

Attendance Awareness Month

Speaking of higher attendance, September is also Attendance Awareness Month! Yet another excellent opportunity to tie two important issues together, you can promote the implementation of breakfast-in-the-classroom as a way to improve attendance and reduce absences and tardies.

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Did you know one in three children in the United States is overweight or obese? Childhood obesity can have negative effects on health outcomes, including putting kids at risk for Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, so don’t forget to mention the benefits of breakfast for maintaining a healthy weight compared to breakfast-skippers along with those improved academic and behavior outcomes!
