Here at Beyond Breakfast we are always on the lookout for great school breakfast resources, and we love to share them with our readers. In recent weeks we have written about The Wellness Impact Report, SNF’s Webinar Wednesdays® series, and the SNF/National Dairy Council School Breakfast Case Study collaboration. Today we are going to highlight another terrific breakfast resource for schools: the Fuel Up to Play 60 2013-14 Playbook.
The Playbook isn’t solely dedicated to school breakfast; you will also find information on physical activity and strategies for overall wellness. For those looking for a new school breakfast resource, the Playbook features a great deal of information, as well as a sneak peek at a new Spring 2014 campaign called “It Starts with School Breakfast”—we promise to bring you more details on the new campaign soon.
Let’s take a quick look at what the 2013-14 Fuel Up to Play 60 Playbook has to offer on the subject of school breakfast. Review the Featured Success Story entitled ‘School breakfast success at Brownsburg West Middle School’ to learn how one Indiana school used a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant to set up a Grab n’ Go station and promote their program. Breakfast participation doubled! We also recommend that you check out the View Last Season’s Plays section. Click on the title of each of the past plays to read a description, which includes links to tips and additional resources. For example, read A Hero’s Breakfast to learn how to design a program in which local community heroes come in and speak to students about the importance of a healthy breakfast; this past play includes links to tips sheets, menu ideas, and templates to help you get started.
Finally, under Healthy Eating, four of the five current Plays listed have a school breakfast focus:
- Breakfast—Grab and Go! is designed to help you set up a grab n’ go delivery that fits the needs of your school. Includes donation letter template, tips for engaging businesses, sample menus, plus tons of additional resources.
- Breakfast-in-the-Classroom explores strategies for implementing in-classroom breakfast. Tips for creative problem solving, marketing, and menu planning are included.
- Have you been trying to Build a Better Breakfast? Use this play to create an awareness campaign to get more students to eat a morning meal! Student involvement is key here, through taste tasting, advisory boards, and community interaction.
- Do you need help to Make Your Case for School Breakfast? This play is all about teamwork, and includes strategies to help bring the players together (teachers, parents, administrators, students) to create a total culture of wellness in your school.
