School Breakfast Grants from Action for Healthy Kids, AASA, and Fuel Up to Play 60

Has adding or growing a school breakfast program been on your “to-do” list for a while now? Are you seeking financial assistance to that end? As if the beginning of the school year isn’t busy enough—here we are, giving you homework, but we promise it will be worth it.

Action for Healthy Kids: 2014-15 School Grants for Healthy Kids

Act fast to take advantage of the 2014-15 School Grants for Healthy Kids offered through Action for Healthy Kids. In partnership with CSX Transportation, Kellogg Company, Kellogg’s Company Fund, and the Walmart Foundation, around 1100 schools will be awarded funds—ranging from $500 to $5000—to support school breakfast and physical activity programs. In addition to receiving financial prizes, winning schools will receive “expertise and people power” to help implement their program, hopefully leading to lasting change.

Deadline: Sunday, August 31, 2014

Important details: Two different types of grants are available to applicants:

• School breakfast program pilot and/or expansion grants are available to applicants in all states. Multiple schools within a district are encouraged to apply, and must participate in NSLP and SBP; free/reduced eligibility must be greater than 40 percent to be eligible, and priority selection will be granted to schools with a student enrollment greater than 500 students.
• Select states (see list) may apply for funds to launch a universal school breakfast pilot, in 2-3 schools in a district where successes can be expanded to multiple schools over three school years; schools must realize an increase in daily ADP to target 85 percent or greater, and must provided information to students/parents on nutrition and caloric content of foods available; must be enrolled in NSLP and SBP, and have free/reduced eligibility greater than 60 percent.

The School Superintendent’s Association (AASA) School Breakfast Expansion Mini-Grant

In partnership with our good friends at the Walmart Foundation, the AASA is providing school districts the opportunity to apply for school breakfast “mini-grants,” in an effort to increase school breakfast participation using alternative breakfast strategies. Elementary schools serving breakfast-in-the-classroom, and middle/high schools employing the ‘Grab ‘n’ Go’ model (kiosks, vending machines, Second Chance breakfast, etc.) can apply for awards ranging from $2000 to $10,000 to support their school breakfast infrastructure. Winners will also receive technical assistance from AASA staff, and superintendents and food service directors who have a history of successfully implementing alternative breakfast strategies.

Deadline: Friday, September 26, 2014

Important details: To apply for an AASA mini-grant, the school district superintendent must be a member of AASA; proposed schools must have 50 percent or greater free/reduced eligibility, and average breakfast participation must be at or below 40 percent; written support from superintendent, district food service director, and principals are required.

Fuel Up to Play 60 Funding Opportunities for 2014-15 School Year

Up to $4000 per year is available to qualifying K-12 schools that are enrolled in FUTP60, and the next deadline is coming up on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Learn more about how to apply for Fuel Up to Play 60 funds, and earn money to help you launch a breakfast-in-the-classroom pilot, a physical activity club, and more on the Fuel Up to Play 60 website, and in the Fuel Up to Play 60’s 2014-15 Playbook. Funding for Fuel Up to Play 60 funds are provided by America’s Dairy Farmers, as well as collaborators for the 2014 funding: Let’s Move! Active Schools, Presidential Youth Fitness Program, Dean Foods, and The Quaker Oats Company.

Deadline: Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Important Details: Your school must be enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60, and the National School Lunch Program; your school must also have a registered FUTP60 Program Advisor.
