The mission of Partners for BIC is to increase breakfast consumption among schoolchildren and spark the academic and nutritional gains associated with the morning meal. The School Breakfast Program remains underutilized: just over half of the low-income children who eat school lunch also eat school breakfast. Lack of awareness about the School Breakfast Program, lack of time to eat breakfast, late bus schedules, and stigma associated with the program are some of the reasons students don’t eat school breakfast when it is served in the cafeteria. Strategies that move breakfast out of the cafeteria and into the classroom are the most successful at overcoming barriers and increasing participation. The Partners for BIC work with school districts across the country to increase school breakfast participation through the implementation of free breakfast after the bell models (breakfast in the classroom, “grab and go,” and second chance).
