Have you heard? Members of our team from the School Nutrition Foundation are on the road as part of an ongoing Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom storytelling project. We are capturing some of our favorite breakfast-in-the-classroom stories from our funded districts to share with you in coming months.
Our first stop was Austin Independent School District in Texas, where one of the most popular school breakfast menu items is a breakfast kolache. We visited several campuses to view and record each step of the three-day speed-scratch process required to make kolaches, a student favorite hot item on the Austin ISD breakfast-in-the-classroom menu.
Introduced to Texas by Czech settlers, the kolache is a bit like a pig-in-a-blanket; a spicy sausage is wrapped and baked in a slightly sweet bun, and versions include extras like cheese or Hatch chiles. The Austin ISD school breakfast kolache is a simple, spicy sausage wrapped in a whole grain roll.
Our trip to Austin ISD included a visit to the district’s central warehouse and extended out to several campuses. In addition to observing kolache preparation and service, our team interviewed stakeholders, talked to students, and sat down to enjoy school breakfast and school lunch.
