Next week we celebrate National School Lunch Week, and the theme for 2011 is “School Lunch–Let’s Grow Healthy.” The themes for NSLW and its companion celebration, National School Breakfast Week (NSBW), were announced at the 2011 Annual National Conference in Nashville.
(Mark your calendars for NSBW, which is coming up in Spring 2012: “School Breakfast — Go for Gold!” is March 5-9, 2012!)
This year’s NSLW theme is designed to help students understand where their food comes from. One of the most essential benefits of school lunches is to help kids grow strong and healthy, and the “School Lunch – Let’s Grow Healthy” theme aims to create a connection between growing kids and the food they eat.
“School Lunch — Let’s Grow Healthy” will provide students with the opportunity to try new foods, as well as promote the use and consumption of locally-sourced products. The 2011 NSLW theme is an opportunity for students to recognize and celebrate the meals they eat, and their personal health–a critical goal of farm-to-school programs, and of school nutrition professionals.
