The Walmart Foundation continues to exhibit generosity and foresight in the fight against childhood hunger with their latest breakfast initiative. The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) has announced a $2.25 million program, funded by the Walmart Foundation, which will increase the number of needy children receiving breakfast at school. The AASA program will seek to expand the reach of existing federal school breakfast programs by using alternate serving methods in four as-yet-unnamed urban districts.
The AASA has dedicated itself to working on increasing access to school breakfast because:
- Fewer than half (46%) of the 19.5 million low-income children who receive free school lunch are receiving a free school breakfast. Essential nutrients for growth and development are delivered when students eat breakfast in the morning.
- Student academic achievement and health can be improved by students eating breakfast.
- Coalition building between administrators is a deciding factor in the success of school breakfast programs.
