This week GENYOUth held their Nutrition + Physical Activity Learning Connection Summit, which brought together players from across the nutrition and physical activity spectrum, to explore the connection that physical activity and nutrition have with learning and behavior. In addition to GENYOUth, the summit partners included National Dairy Council, the National Football League, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American School Health Association; health professionals, educators, athletes, students, chefs, and corporations came together not only to explore the connections between health and learning, but to find ways to increase access and participation to programs which benefit students health, learning, and lives.
At the summit SNA President Sandra Ford was joined by Chef Carla Hall (“The Chew”) and eight “student sous chefs”—a.k.a. Fuel Up to Play 60 student ambassadors—for a panel entitled “Crafting Healthy School Breakfasts.” During the panel, the students discussed favorite breakfast items—French toast sticks, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast pizzas, and cereal with milk, to name a few—and demonstrated how to create easy breakfast parfaits with fruit, yogurt, and cereal. An important theme discussed during the panel was student involvement and acceptability when it comes to school breakfast; student taste testing, student-created recipes, and participation being keys to successful breakfast programs.
