On Thursday, January 15, 2015, the Partners for Breakfast in the ClassroomSchool Nutrition Foundation, FRAC, NAESP Foundation, and NEA HIN, with the generous support of the Walmart Foundation—will hold the next School Breakfast Summit, in continuance of the newest phase of our program.

PBIC_header2In this latest cycle, we have shifted our focus from direct implementation in individual schools to a state-level expansion; this expansion will allow us to work in partnership with local organizations to provide district- and school-level technical assistance and support for start-up breakfast-in-the-classroom programs. In addition to our existing partners, Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom will be bringing in allies from local anti-hunger, education, nutrition, and health communities in each eligible state, where we then host “Breakfast Summits.” The summits are designed to help generate interest and build strong, systemic support for BIC programs, and lay the groundwork for a smooth assessment and grant application process.

On Thursday, stakeholders will gather at the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools in Montgomery; representatives from twelve school districts will be in attendance, as well as representatives from the Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom, the Alabama Food Bank Association, Alabama Department of Education, Alabama Education Association, and Alabama School Nutrition Association.

The competitive grant application looks to fund three to five school districts in the state of Alabama. Eligibility is based on school-level (not district-level) data. The grants target school districts with high percentages of free and reduced-priced students. Priority will be given to schools with:

  • At least 80 percent of students qualify for free- or reduced-priced meals (schools that offer free breakfast to all students or are 70 percent or higher will also be considered)
  • Average Breakfast Participation at or below 50 percent
  • Strong stakeholder support and buy-in from school leadership and staff
